About

“a delightfully zany, witty and inventive company …unconventional but irresistible … catch them if you can”
The Oxford Times

Unexpected Opera specialises in cabaret opera because Artistic Director Lynn Binstock wants to make opera that is engaging and fun as well as dramatic and moving. Our shows are ‘mash-ups’ that share opera’s incredible range and explore a variety of characters and ideas. We remove the high art shroud that can make opera seem impenetrable.  Read here Fringe Opera’s interview with Lynn in May 2014.

Our flagship production, Opera Naked, offers a revealing and witty look at the lives of opera singers. Premièring in 2012, it was a finalist for Best Opera at the Off-West End Awards and received extensive coverage in Opera Now magazine. In 2013 Opera Naked ran at the St James Theatre in London and the Brighton Fringe to acclaim from audiences and press alike, earning a 5-star review from Broadway Baby and an Argus Angel Award for Artistic Excellence.

Participation and engagement are fundamental to Unexpected Opera. We produce unique collaborations with church and community choirs. Our private Audition Clinics have helped many singers develop their skills and imagination. We also provide Singing Waiters (with unexpected comedy) for private occasions. Go to the Events page for information about these activities.

Take a look at our History page for information about previous productions and keep watching the website for news from our Producer Amanda Laidler about our exciting plans for new shows.
